True beginner, semi-luddite here. I thought I had things figured out but now I’m confused again. I started a blog through WordPress and I’m assuming it was wordpress.com. I bought my domain name, so does that mean I’m self hosted? If I upgrade my blog to a Genesis or Headway site, how does that change how I’m hosted, or does it? Your site has been very helpful thus far, thanks for all your work.

Hosting that is aimed at specific CMS platforms and tweaked optimally for them: e.g., WordPress hosting, Drupal hosting, Magento hosting, etc. In these cases, the best hosts do far more than just provide the minimal requirements for those platforms. They provide a rich, and fully managed environment so your site can perform like a well-tuned machine.
You can get started using Lightsail for your website with just a few clicks. For all hosting accounts located on servers on the West Coast, I used a testing server located in Ashburn, VA. And for all hosting accounts living on servers on the East Coast, I used a testing server located in Portland, Oregon.
All plans also include a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, which assures your clients that your website is secure; a secure shell (SSH) protocol that allows you to access other computers through your website, useful for customer service inquiries; and a solid-state drive (SSD), which delivers faster load times and superior uptime for your website. The company backs up your website daily and restores it for free; most services charge for one of these services, if not both.
Many web hosting providers, such as GoDaddy & One.com are also domain name registrars so that you can kill two birds with one stone — when you purchase your web hosting package, you can also purchase a domain name.
While some companies claim that 99.5 percent of their customers will never have a throttling problem, if you store large amounts of media on your site, you still may get a warning from the hosting provider to reduce usage or you will be temporarily shut off. And because it’s a shared server, you are at risk of taking other customers’ allotted unlimited space. If you exceed bandwidth or disk space multiple times, you’ll be required to upgrade your plan.
I know what you are after when you seek to find a hosting company: it’s accurate information. But it’s a fact that all bloggers who evaluate web hosting companies are bound to be subjective up to a point. I can tell you bluntly that I like these companies and I am making an honest recommendation for you.
Colocation web hosting service: similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may little to no support directly for their client’s machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes. Formerly, many colocation providers would accept any system configuration for hosting, even ones housed in desktop-style minitower cases, but most hosts now require rack mount enclosures and standard system configurations.
Cloud hosting is similar to VPS hosting in that the server isn’t actually a physical machine. Rather, your hosting is distributed across multiple servers, all of which are connected (by the web host provider) to form a network of sorts.
One of the most popular web hosting’ type is a Shared hosting, which means lots of websites placed on one server and, in such way, connected to the Internet. Shared web hosting are run be a system administrator, who declares the capacity of your bandwidth and disk space. This capacity will be constantly increase, which will grant you more power in the future. Though it doesn’t give you a full control over the hosting and is less secure in comparison with others, it is much more affordable and is perfect for those users who don’t strive for an absolute supervision but need their website simply to work. InMotion Hosting, GreenGeeks and SiteGround are only few of the best examples of the most efficient shared hosting.
Very nice write up. Finding a good and reliable web host is not as easy as it seems. There are several good hosts on your list, but I would like to add Rose Hosting. They have great support and their prices are affordable.
Web hosting services work by storing your website files in high-powered computers (web servers) connected to a very fast network. When someone types in your web address (such as www.midphase.com), the Internet connects to the web server holding your website files and then transfers your website information back to their computer. From there they can surf and view the pages of your website.
PJ Fancher (HostingAdvice.com): Web Hosting Hub is good for sites that will function well on shared hosting in the short- and long-term. Their lack of dedicated and VPS options can make scaling an issue. That being said, they are adequate for small sites that don’t plan on seeing tens of… Go to full review »
While it will ultimately be up to you to secure your website from external (and sometimes internal) threats, your web host should take the security of its server and infrastructure seriously too. This means:
Matt Mullenweg, co-founding developer of WordPress, launched a company called Automattic which provides “restricted” free blog hosting service at WordPress.com, and you can pay/upgrade to unlock features such as CSS modification etc. However, to get the full power of WordPress.org on WP.com service, you have to spend over $3250 per month for hosting.
We use cloud hosting for Leadformly – a ‘software as a service’ (SaaS) tool we created to make it easy to build lead generation forms. We chose cloud hosting for Leadformly because on some days we could have hundreds of users logging in and building complex forms, while on other days it could be thousands. Cloud hosting means that we don’t need to worry about the tool slowing down during peak usage times.
